After more than 20 years repairing boards, Ive pretty much seen it all. Today, SUPs are now starting to dominate my shop and the types of repairs differ so much. Damage from docks, canals, cypress trees, and paddles are the norm. Until David Rose from Paddle Board Orlando brought me a good one….

David dropped off a brand new Naish 14″ Glide Racing/Touring series that had been damaged in shipping. The left rail was smashed so hard that it compressed the foam core and left an open void, along with breaking a large chunk of glass where the rail compress into the bottom of the board. The board also had a half buckle due to the compression. Understand now, this particular board is a kevlar and carbon fiber finished board. To compress a rail and give the board a buckle means that it had to receive very heavy blunt force. Ouch.

This repair required me to refill the void of compressed foam with new foam which helped pull the rail back out to the proper shape. This was the hardest and most time consuming part of the repair as my goal was to reduce the amount of resin fill to get the rail to come back to the original shape. From there, layers of carbon fiber cloth and epoxy was used to re-layer the rail area and across the now opened up buckle. A lot of sanding later with some cosmetic painting to retouch the damaged areas, the board was complete and the repair was barely noticeable.

I take the time to do my research on board constructions so that my repairs are the best quality possible to my customers. Not all boards are manufactured the same, so not all ding repair methods work for every type of board. Make sure that if you dont bring your high tech shred sled to Surfboard Medic to be repaired, you take it to a qualified person who will do the job right.
